A. DESCRIPTION

Every day we encounter events that are quite amazing and complex, yet we pay little attention to them. This course invites you to look at some of these natural phenomena in new ways—through the lens of inquiry. The purpose of this course is twofold: 1) to extend understandings of key science concepts through inquiry, and 2) to help students apply science experiences to their daily lives.

As a general science course, we will cover a wide range of science topics using earth sciences as a focus. Life on Earth, Earth History, Changes in Earth’s Atmosphere and Earth in Space will be the four themes covered over two years of instruction.

Course activities include weekly science investigations, readings, discussions, journal keeping, self-assessment, and teacher evaluations. To succeed in this class you need a willingness to investigate, ask questions, work hard and share your ideas.

At the end of this course, we will know a lot more about certain key science concepts in the areas of biology/life sciences, ecology, earth science, physics, chemistry, energy and engineering. We will come to appreciate the role of inquiry in science. As we learn, we will have to ask questions, make predictions, present evidence, collaborate with peers, and come up with explanations—all important science skills.


B. ORGANIZATION

This course has been deliberately designed to encourage inquiry-based learning. I assist with questions, reminders, and suggestions. I will help recap our work and, when necessary, I will refocus your learning. In this way, I will help you grow in your confidence to analyze and make meaning of scientific data. I will also encourage you to support each other as you design your own inquiry-based experience.

The course requires collaborative work. In addition to doing investigations and assignments on your own, you will also belong to a study group. Here is where you will share your experiences, questions, frustrations, conjectures, and successes. I ask that students work collegially with your fellow group members and watch out for each other.

Each week I will comment on the previous week's work, introducing the current week's assignment, introduce investigations and provide time for reflection and assessment. We will conduct an investigation and work on a science assignment, and then discuss the work in small groups and with the class.


C. COURSE OBJECTIVES

In general there are three course goals:

  • To further your own science understanding;
  • To learn effective strategies of a “citizen scientist”; and
  • To plan and carry out inquiry-based science investigations.
